Aurora Officials Face Recovery Choices After Fiber Cut Disrupts City Systems
The city must decide how to strengthen backup communications and maintain service access while repairs continue following the Interstate 88 cable damage.
How we reported this

A fiber optic cable break near Interstate 88 knocked out Aurora’s internet, website and phone systems early Thursday, forcing city staff to rely on alternate channels for non-emergency requests while crews work on restoration.
The outage arrived months after the March 2025 launch of myAurora 311, the city’s consolidated non-emergency contact point. Residents now face questions about how quickly full phone and online access will return and what permanent fixes the city will adopt to keep services running during future disruptions.
Current contact options remain open
Walk-in service at Fire Station 8, 3770 McCoy Drive, continues to accept requests for street maintenance, debris removal and garbage issues. The 311 center also processes roughly 3,000 emails each month and takes online submissions through aurorail.citysourced.com or the 311 mobile app. Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday the center fields about 400 calls on average, showing residents still turn to the system for routine city business even when main phone lines are down.
The renovated $1.4 million 911 dispatch center that opened in February 2024 with 12 workstations and six to eight monitors per station provides a separate emergency pathway that was unaffected by the fiber cut. The Aurora Alert system, which residents can join by texting AURORAIL to 888777 or registering at www.aurora-il.org/auroraalert, supplies another independent route for official notifications.
Key decisions on backups and reach
City leaders must now determine whether to accelerate expansion of the 1650 AM emergency radio station, which received an FCC waiver in 2024 to raise power to 10 watts and cover the entire city. They also face choices about redundant internet pathways and the long-term role of walk-in locations such as Fire Station 8 once primary systems return. Residents can register for Aurora Alert now to receive updates directly while repairs proceed.
